KE Seminar - Assessing research impact: Issues, challenges and ways forward

  • Venue: Centre for Enterprise, Teesside University, Middlesbrough
  • Start: Tue, 05 Feb 2013 16:15:00 GMT
  • End: Tue, 05 Feb 2013 17:15:00 GMT

There are many challenges in assessing the impact of academic research on policy and practice.

  • When to assess impact? - too early and impact has yet to occur too late and it is hard to trace.
  • Which methods are best at identifying and illustrating impact?
  • How can we demonstrate the difference made by research rather than other factors?

In this seminar, Sarah Morton will draw from her own research assessing the impact from a research partnership, along with her ten years’ experience as a knowledge exchange practitioner to explore these issues in more detail. She will consider how research impact occurs, and argue that close work with research-users is the key to ensuring impact. A theory-based approach to impact assessment will be presented, linking research and KE to outcomes and creating a framework for evidence collection.

Speaker: Dr Sarah Morton, Co-Director (Communication and Knowledge Exchange), Centre for Research on Families and Relationships, University of Edinburgh
