North East Medical Sociology Group - call for papers and save the date

The North East Medical Sociology Group is currently planning its next half day seminar which will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 November at Sunderland University, City Campus.

The seminar on this occasion will focus on the timely theme of austerity, welfare, politics and the effects on health.  The keynote speaker will be Professor Ted Schrecker, Professor of Global Health Policy in the Centre for Public Policy & Health at Durham University.  His presentation will be entitled ‘First, do no harm: Neoliberal epidemics and the case against social policy malpractice’.  This will be followed by a panel discussion, in which we will be joined by Professor Rob MacDonald of Teesside University, on the extent to which – on topics like this – academics should be advocates rather than just disinterested observers.

The Group is again offering researchers in the North East the opportunity to make a short presentation about their research.  Two-three presentations will be selected, and these can be on any topic.

Abstracts

If you are interested in submitting an abstract, this should be of no more than 250 words.  Abstracts should be sent to Sue McAsey (s.mcasey@tees.ac.uk) by Friday, 25 September.  Contributions are invited from early career researchers and PhD students as well as established academics.

Even if you are not currently interested in presenting your work, please make a note in your diary to come along to this event.  Further details and booking information will be circulated in September.
