PhD in Childhood Obesity Prevention in Africa

The studentship will focus on the development of an obesity prevention intervention in primary school children in Soweto or possibly other regions of South Africa. The successful candidate will undertake various projects, potentially including evidence synthesis, and quantitative and qualitative research focused on physical activity and dietary behaviour in primary school children. The student will also be expected to spend significant amounts of time conducting fieldwork in South Africa.

The student will be registered with the University of Cambridge and belong to one of its Colleges. The student will be integrated into the Behavioural Epidemiology Programme, one of seven MRC-core funded programmes within the MRC Epidemiology Unit (www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk), which investigates the causes and prevention of diabetes and obesity. The studentship will also be affiliated with CEDAR (www.cedar.iph.cam.ac.uk), a UKCRC centre of excellence in public health research that aims to understand the population-level determinants of dietary and physical activity behaviour, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and estimate the long term costs and benefits of behaviour change. It will also link closely to the MRC/Wits Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit (www.wits.ac.za/dphru) at the University of Witwatersrand, which investigates genetic, physiological, psycho-social, and lifestyle determinants of growth and development, obesity and risk of cardiometabolic disease, and healthy ageing through innovative multi-disciplinary methodologies across the lifespan.

The studentship will commence in October 2016. This is a 3-year position for those who have a Masters degree, or equivalent training, in an appropriate scientific discipline. We provide diverse training opportunities for all aspects of research and for transferable academic and generic skills. The academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second class degree or equivalent.
