EQUAL North network: collaborative research on health inequalities

The North of England has persistently poorer health than the rest of England and the gap has widened over four decades and five governments.

The EQUAL North research and practice network brings together over 400 policy makers, practitioners and academics across the North of England with a common interest in health and social inequality from across the north of England.

The network supports the implementation of recommendations made by the Due North Report, an independent inquiry into health equity in the North commissioned in 2014 by Public Health England.

The Inquiry Panel produced four sets of recommendations around tackling poverty and economic inequality, promoting healthy development in early childhood; increasing the influence of the public; and strengthening the role of the health sector.

Fuse leads the network, in collaboration with LiLaC (Liverpool and Lancaster Universities Collaboration for Public Health Research) and ScHARR (School of Health & Related Research, University of Sheffield). The network has held a series of successful events to build a community of partners across the North and develop research priorities for addressing health and social inequalities in the region.
